Working with Autism in

Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy

Friday April 25, 2025

9 AM- 3:30 PM Pacific Time

Live on Zoom only

This workshop will not be recorded

This is course is endorsed by the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT) and brought to you by TRI EFT Alliant.

This workshop presents an opportunity to understand how to practice Emotionally Focused Therapy with couples where one or both partners are autistic through a neurodivergent-informed lens. This workshop hopes to enhance cultural competence and improve awareness of what is often a misunderstood neurodevelopmental condition that remains largely misdiagnosed or undiagnosed in many individuals, especially within marginalized groups.

Through instruction, discussion, and EFCT video demonstrations with couples, participants will learn about areas of special consideration when working with autism and ways to adapt the practice of EFCT to accommodate autistic needs, thereby making EFCT neuroinclusive. Included also will be important discussions around autism diagnosis, marginalized identities, strengths, disabilities, and self-of-therapist considerations when working with autism.

Attending this workshop will enable you to:

  • Identify the unique ways autistic people experience and respond to the world

  • Identify the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

  • Conceptualize autism from a non-pathologizing lens

  • Identify strengths and challenges of people with autism

  • Apply EFT with couples in a neurodiversity-informed manner

  • Understand how co-existing diagnoses like ADHD and other marginalized identities intensify the autistic experience
